Within You I Breathe

We have laughed and cried
Little kisses tasted
Even with hands tied
Temporarily sated

We’ve talked through the night
While dawn tried to hide
We hoped to see the light
But these feelings aren’t denied

Even as I lie
And tears form deep inside
I want to see your face
As the light breaks through the windowpane

As when I lay down to sleep
Even if my arms are empty
There, in my soul-wrapped life
Is you, nestled deep inside

Never in my life — and I imagine never in yours —
Has a passion filled my heart as much as you fill mine
You have stood still and constant while I’ve searched for a clue
But it’s clear to me now, there is no other soul mate than you

At times I’ve let you down, and left you without my touch
At times my patience was tested,
but with little kisses tasted
The urgency of this love settles back to its deep abode —
safe and growing

I know that we connect on more levels than I ever would have believed
But I am also realistic that arguments and disagreements will occur
But I have no need to be right or win every battle
I can easily settle on a difference of opinion — yes, not like most men

Your life and love that I’ve just begun to see
Even after all the time together
Keeps expressing itself deeper
As I allow you just to be

To be your SELF — only you, no need to be anything else
Your happy self, your scared self, your fired-up get-out-of-my-way self
All those qualities and more… just be you! I love that

For this is what love should be —
Accepting of how you are at any given time
With patience and understanding
Not with judgment and expectation

And I am not perfect (as you roll your eyes and heartily agree!)
But you continue to bring out the best in me
As you allow me to just be

You say you’ve never felt this kind of love before
And neither have I
I have tried to love like this

But this is a mathematical expression of the infinite
in how much room there is for our love to grow…
And I could easily write all day
Of how I long for you
Long to be with you —
FULLY with you
Out in the light of day and deep into the warmth of our night

I’ve written many things with you on my mind
And there is so much more to express of our love divine

And you are my yoga
My totally advanced pose
With things to continue to learn
About your heart, body, and soul

So, with these few lines I write
With love in my heart for a future night
Where I see your beautiful face —
eyes full of love and release
As I stroke your hair and watch you sleep

It is within your breath that I breathe.
It is within you that I breathe.
