The Why Practice

Why Do We Forget Our True Nature

We’ve all had those rare moments — a direct hit of our true nature.
Something in us opens, revealing the most divine essence that is us: peace, love, joy, awareness, bliss.

And yet, that kind of clarity can feel too big. We may feel unworthy of it, unsure how to hold it. Doubt creeps in. We push it away. We even push ourselves away.

The truth is, we are always in relationship with ourselves. The bridge between who we think we are and who we really are is the Divine. When we lose that bridge, grief and frustration can rise. The mind starts asking: “Why do I feel this way? Why am I impatient? Why, why, why?”

The Why Practice is a way to come home to YOU — the deepest part of you.
It’s about letting go of self-limiting beliefs and replacing them with a truer knowing: Your birthright is peace, love, and joy.

And that’s what we’re about to do…

Step 1 — Sense Awakening

Sit comfortably. Let your spine rise tall but easy. Slow your breath. We begin by waking up the senses — opening the door to inner awareness.

  • Earth – Smell: Notice any scent in the air. Recall a smell that delighted you — the aroma of fresh rain, a favorite meal, the scent of someone you love. Be there again for a moment.
  • Water – Taste: Sense the taste in your mouth. Remember a flavor that lit you up. Where were you? Who were you with?
  • Fire – Sight: Soften your eyes. Recall something beautiful that warmed your heart the instant you saw it.
  • Air – Touch: Feel the contact of body, clothes, and air. Remember a touch that comforted or thrilled you.
  • Space – Sound: Listen. Recall a sound that opened you — the voice of someone dear, music that moved you, wind in trees.

Step 2 — Breath Through the Seven Locations (Chakra Focus)

We now move our breath through seven locations in the body — each one a powerful energy center, or chakra.

For each center:

  • Take at least one full, free breath — no ratios, no control — just feeling the fullness of where you are in that moment.
  • Stay for up to three breaths if you wish to strengthen your connection at that chakra.
  • Inhale through the nose; exhale slow and steady, without forcing.
  1. Root Chakra – Mūlādhāra (Colon / Root)
Hands on the ground. Inhale and draw from the earth. Exhale, sending that energy upward and out through the nose.
  2. Sacral Chakra – Svādhiṣṭhāna (Pelvis / Sacral)
Hands in your lap. Inhale into the pelvic bowl. Exhale, letting the breath rise through the body and out.
  3. Solar Plexus Chakra – Maṇipūra (Low Belly / Navel)
Hands on lower abdomen. Inhale to your hands, letting the belly expand. Exhale upward and out.
  4. Heart Chakra – Anāhata (Heart Center)
Hands over heart. Inhale breath and spirit into your chest. Exhale, letting energy flow upward.
  5. Throat Chakra – Viśuddha (Throat Center)
Fingers above collarbones. Inhale into the upper chest and throat. Exhale slowly, feeling energy rise toward the crown.
  6. Third Eye Chakra – Ājñā (Brow / Mind)
Fingers at brow. Inhale deeply, filling the mind-space. Exhale slowly, creating openness and receptivity.
  7. Crown Chakra – Sahasrāra (Crown of Head)
Hands at the sides of head, fingertips brushing crown. Inhale to expand your whole body. Exhale as fingers lift and point skyward — open to the Divine.

Reflection / Integration Prompt: How can I deepen my true understanding of myself each day?
Carry this mantra: “My true nature is love, peace, and joy.” Repeat it often. Let it replace old stories with truth.

It’s easy to forget who we are. But each time we remember, it’s like finding something precious we thought we’d lost — and our connection to Grace grows deeper.
You can always come home to yourself.
