The quality of inertia — heavy, dull, resistant.
Tamas is the guna of stillness, darkness, and resistance. It anchors and grounds, but in excess leads to lethargy, confusion, or denial. It is rest and restoration when balanced, stagnation when not.
Like a muted bass note held too long — grounding, but heavy.
Body → bones, sleep, fat. Mind → confusion, resistance. Emotion → apathy, gloom, avoidance.
